Shortwave Broadcasting

It was a cold evening of January 1963 when I listened accidently to the shortwave by turning the knobs of of my parents' radio receiver. Suddenly, I heard a German speaking female voice in the 49 m band. She told about the beautiful sites of her home country. A kind of strange but nice music followed. I listened to the German transmission of Radio Sofia from Bulgaria. At the end of this transmission I heard the address of the station. Not knowing that this was my very first reception report, I wrote a letter to Sofia.

After a couple of weeks, the postman brought a packet from Radio Sofia. I did not only receive my first QSL card but also some souvenirs and literature concerning Bulgaria and Radio Sofia. This was the beginning of a long SWL "career".

Since more than 30 years, I am used to listen to the shortwave bands. According to season and day time, I prefer to listen to the little local stations in Latin America, Africa, Far East on the 60 or 90 m bands as well as to European, North African, or American station on the medium wave.

You may visit the page showing some QSL cards (171 kb) of my collection.
